‘Ghost In The Shell’ Live Action Film To Star Margot Robbie? ‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ Actress In Talks For Lead Role, Manga Fans Lobby For Laverne Cox Instead?

Today it was announced that Dreamworks ‘Ghost in the Shell' live action adaptation is now in talks to cast actress Margot Robbie. No information has been released about which role she would play, but given her recent success in "The Wolf Of Wall Street," one could guess it would be as the lead character Motoko Kusanagi. Some early fan reactions though are instead lobbying for a transgender casting choice (based on info from the original manga). Should Dreamworks consider "Orange is the New Black" star Laverne Cox?

According to The Wrap, "Margot Robbie is in early talks to star in "Ghost in the Shell," which Rupert Sanders is set to direct for Dreamworks." They also described the adaptation of the popular manga by Masamune Shirow: "The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime."

Some other key crew have been established including producers Avi Arad and Steven Paul. The script, which is already completed, was written by William Wheeler. Steven Spielberg has long backed the project so, it seems that the adaptation will come sooner than later.

But manga fans are already worried about the project becoming too Americanized according to Screenrant. In fact, some fans have already begun to express their casting wishes for a surprising up and coming actress: Laverne Cox. In the comments section of i09's coverage of the story, one fan says, "would have been kind of cool if they had cast a trans woman in the role given in the manga they hint the Major might have used the cyborgification to change genders." A comment by monsieurxander quickly followed: "I'd pay cash money to see Laverne Cox in an action role." Multiple fans afterward seemed interested in the idea, although now the lobbying has shifted to Asian actresses such as Rinko Kikuchi, who recently starred in "Pacific Rim."

Since Margot Robbie hasn't been confirmed, luckily for manga fans there's still hope of a more racially true to the source material casting. Nevertheless, the project seems to be at least moving along after many years of rumor.
