2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions: Greg Monroe Saga Ends With Qualifying Offer! Former Georgetown Hoya Becomes Top Free Agent Next Year!

The 2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions took one of the big names down. Greg 'The Moose' Monroe of the Detroit Pistons ends the stalemate by putting his money (reduced amount) where his mouth is. The qualifying offer is officially signed.

Greg Monroe has long reiterated that his holdout with the Detroit Pistons is not about the money but about his desire for changes in the Pistons roster, specifically the logjam at the frontline with him, Andre Drummond and Josh Smith. It was doomed at the start, and now he wants that revised.

Monroe and his agent never really entertained offers because they know that if he signed any, the Pistons could match it and Monroe would be stuck.

Despite the 'new era' in Detroit because of Stan Van Gundy's assumption of power, the changes did not take place as it's a Herculean task to trade Josh Smith and his contract.

With the qualifying offer, SVG has bought himself some time to convince Greg Monroe to stay. Either he could make the moves that Monroe is asking for or he could actually make the roster work.

The details of the qualifying offer from ESPN:

"Greg Monroe has signed a $5.48 million, one-year qualifying offer with the Detroit Pistons, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.

Monroe averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds in 2013-14 -- numbers almost identical to what he posted during the previous two seasons. He's shot 51 percent from the field over the course of his career."

It is still a big risk for Detroit because there will be a lot of teams with significant cap space next year. Most of these teams set some cap space aside to pursue Kevin Love, but he is probably off the table. The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks are some of those teams, and they are willing to throw around max money.
