‘Iron Man 4’ Cast: Robert Downey, Jr Says There Is ‘No Plan’ For the Fourth Tony Stark Movie! Is This The Final Nail On The Coffin For The Franchise?

Some good things never last and trilogies have a tendency to end after the third chapter. The 'Iron Man' trilogy already dotted its period last year with "Iron Man 3" but nothing can stop us from talking and speculating about Iron Man 4. Except maybe this report.

Marvel's main man Downey was in Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival where he is promoting his movie "The Judge." It's really his movie since it was produced by his own production company. Variety caught up with the Chrome Avenger and asked the all-important  question that has been asked a thousand times before:

"There isn't one in the pipe. No, there's no plan for a fourth 'Iron Man.'"

RDJ is actually signed with Marvel and Disney for two "Avengers" sequels with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" wrapping production about a month ago. The release date is set on May 1, 2015. Variety actually called the third sequel with a 2018 release date, although it has yet to be announced.

More from Variety's encounter with RDJ:

"When asked if he would 'let' somebody else play Tony Stark, Downey laughed off the idea.

'I like that the idea is that it would be up to me, like I'm casting director for Marvel,' he said.

'Don't give it to anybody else,' his  'Judge' costar Robert Duvall advised.

Downey did joke about the possibility of 'The Judge' being a trilogy when talking about how much he cherished working with Duvall.

'Maybe it'll be trilogy, like that other series he was in,' he joked. 'I heard two of those were good.'"

Of course, the character belongs to Marvel, but perhaps no one in Superhero movies have actually owned up to their roles more than Robert Downey, Jr-except maybe Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. But the level of success that Iron Man reached makes it the most profitable solo hero trilogy with only the Avengers poised to tread a better path (and a big part of that can also be traced to Iron Man fans).

Marvel would be greatly (and rightfully) criticized if the sole issue were money. Iron Man is a sure draw, no one would argue with that. Even $ 100 million would not be so much of a risk if you have a guaranteed billion in returns.
