'The Vampire Diaries' Star Paul Wesley To Have One-Sided On-Screen Romance With Candice Accola; Ian Somerhalder Thinks Season 6 Might Be Last

As the show's sixth season gears up, "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley will be embarking on a new direction. Recent spoilers tease that Stefan Salvatore might temporarily leave Mystic Falls to focus on his new yet undisclosed profession.

Stefan's leaving will also leave fans questioning if there's still a possibility for him and Caroline to be an item. After all, "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley already revealed that his character would no longer pine for Elena in the upcoming season.

"There's no two ways about it, nobody likes a mopey, whipped dude. Viewers appreciate a character that's strong, and decisive, and masculine. I think he's moved on, and I think that's a sexy quality," he shared at the 2014 San Diego Comic Con event.

However, despite Stefan's moving on from Elena, executive producer Caroline Dries said that the romance of "Steroline" might be one-sided: "Her romance with Stefan will become a major part of her Season 6 storyline, even if that romance isn't exactly a two-way street. She's going to realize it's a little more one-sided than she was hoping, and there's going to be some fallout from that."

Meanwhile, Ian Somerhalder hints that "The Vampire Diaries" season 6 might be the last.

"It very well could be our last [season] I think now that there's a finality to it, everyone's really realizing that this is a very important time in our lives. We created some very cool storytelling," he told Digital Spy magazine.

It was previously reported that one lead star did not sign the contract yet for the seventh season. Producer Julie Plec once said that the show would continue "as long as the actors want the show to go."
