‘Iron Man 4’ Rumors: Robert Downey Jr Just Kidding? Marvel Will Not Let A Billion Dollar Franchise End! Was Tony Stark Just Fooling Around?

The news spread like wildfire and it was meant to silence all speculation. There is no plan for "Iron Man 4" in Marvel's Phase Three. We will see Robert Downey, Jr. in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Avengers 3" and that's about it for Tony Stark.

Should we really believe that? Grantland analyzed the interview and warned us not to take anything at face value-because we really want "Iron Man 4."

"Did Marvel just say "We're good with $2.4 billion, shut 'er down"?

After doubling Iron Man 2's receipts with the third one in 2013, making just $300 million less than The Avengers, and on a (slightly) cheaper budget? And knowing those same Avengers are coming back in 2015 and that they're gonna re-up Tony Stark's eminence so hard, all over again? Maybe we're living in a different world than we've all thought we were living in for the last X years and this is a thing that could happen in Hollywood and make sense. Dunno. That doesn't really seem like a possible development in human history."

Iron Man is just too successful. Even with Spider Man's critically disastrous Spider Man 3, it earned north of 800 million-and Sony just can't let it go. 'Iron Man 3' was a full half billion dollars more profitable than SM3, and it was not half as bad. It simply does not make sense.

"Doesn't Marvel have a calendar for all its movies through, like, 2065?

The year is actually, last we heard, 2028. But yes, it seems obvious that, in the deepest, most secret recesses of Marvel, one of those calendar dates is referred to as 'Iron Man 4' - and another is conceivably known as 'Iron Man 5.'"

Even Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President has repeatedly mentioned that there will be Iron Man 4 somewhere along the way, maybe later not sooner. But will it still feature Marvel's main man?

Let's take a deeper look at Robert Downey, Jr, the man and his statements:

"Asked if he'd 'let' another actor take over the Iron Man role, Downey sardonically replied,"I like that the idea is that it would be up to me, like I'm casting director for Marvel." Ha! True! Then Downey 'joked' that The Judge could make a great franchise. 'Maybe it'll be a trilogy, like that other series he was in,' Downey said. "I heard two of those were good.' Always sillying, RDJ! Who knows what to believe with you! (Seriously, does anybody actually know what we're supposed to believe here?)"

If anyone will take humor and misdirection way too far, it's Robert Downey, Jr. This is exactly what he wants us to do-believe him. And that is the reason why we shouldn't.
