UK Artists Render Cover Of Sam Smith’s Hit ‘Stay With Me’; Soul Singer Welcomes More Fame

Months after the release of the smash hit 'Stay With Me', Sam Smith continued to make waves in his singing career making other UK pop stars, Charlie XCX and FKA Twigs admire him, both rendering a cover and taking the song to a new direction.  The pop star's success in his first album "Lonely Hour" also raised the public's excitement of his cover of a Tracy Chapman's classic "Fast Car".

A video of FKA Twigs' performance at the BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge can be seen on Youtube in the first week of September. The 26-year English hit maker, said to be Rob Pattinson's new girlfriend, deconstructs the gospel melody of the song and added her slow, ambient moods with her eerie voice and synthesizers taking over the bass. Slate.com highlights FKA Twigs "breathy, stutter-step vocals" and off-kilter breakbeat as something very radical and innovative.

Charlie XCX, said to be one of Smith's friends, also showed a cover on Portland's 95.5 Bing Lounge with her wearing fancy leopard long-sleeves and dark shades. The "Boom Clap" songstress gave a trip-hop rhythm of the song with a low-key dissolving the original forlorn tone and highlighting Charlie's bubbly nature.

Meanwhile, Sam Smith and his band showcased a different song arrangement of Chapman's "Fast Car" for the BBC's Live Lounge series, Rollingstone reports. The new version gives a slow tempo of the original and adding his RnB and soul unique way of singing.

'Stay With Me' was first released months ago on Saturday Night Live. Smith's performance is highlighted with the presence of a gospel choir on stage. He also performed with hiphop icon, Mary J. Blige at the Apollo Theater. His cover of Whitney Houston's hit song "How Will I Know" has also gained popularity in Youtube.

The soul singer's courageous move in admitting his gender in public in The Fader also contributed to his popularity. In a previous interview, Smith shares his inspiration in making the album saying that much of his are about his unrequited love to a man. "I want to make it a normality because this is a non-issue. People wouldn't ask a straight person these questions. I've tried to be clever with this album, because it's also important to me that my music reaches everybody. I've made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody - whether it's a guy, a female or a goat - and everybody can relate to that."
