Amazon Fire Phone Now Costs $0.99 On Contract, Is Retailer Giant Desperate To Sell Struggling Smartphone?

The Amazon Fire Phone was once one of the most anticipated devices on the market, considering that it might follow the pricing of the retailer giant's Kindle slates.

However, more than a few thousand people were disappointed that the Fire OS-powered smartphone costs $650 off contract and $199 with a two-year contract.

As a result, the Fire Phone has not done well enough to be considered a success. While it features some fairly high-end specs, the pricing was just too high for an Android smartphone that does not come with Google services.

The Amazon handset packs a 4.7-inch display with HD (1280 x 720) resolution, a Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU running at 2.2GHz.

Also on board is either a 32GB or 64GB of internal memory, a 13MP primary camera and a 2.1MP front sensor. The device comes with some cool features which include dynamic perspective which uses the four front sensors to change the screen's perspective depending on how you are looking at it, and Firefly which allows you to 'find' objects around you in the Amazon store.

According to a recent report by GSM Arena, the Amazon Fire Phone now costs $0.99 with a two-year contract, down from $199. That also means that the off-contract price of the handset is now down to only $449 for the base (32GB) model.

Also included in the deal is a one-year Amazon Prime membership that is already worth $99.

Is the Fire Phone still worth a try in spite being a couple of months old already?
