This past Saturday, Alice "Nonie" Dubes and Vivian Boyack got married after spending more than seven decades together. Dubes is 90, and Boyack is 91. According to Oregon Alive, the two sat next to each other during the ceremony.

Free News Pos reports that the two women met each other while growing up in their hometown of Yale, Iowa. Eventually, they moved to Davenport where Dubes did payroll work and Boyack taught school. Dubes stated that she and Boyack have been enjoying their life together tremendously, and that over the years they have traveled to all 50 states, all of the provinces of Canada, and to England twice. "We've had a good time," she enthused.

Boyack simply commented that it takes "a lot of love and work" to keep a relationship going for 72 years.

The reverend of the ceremony, Rev. Linda Hunsaker, stated, "This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago," asserting to close family and friends at the ceremony that the time had finally come.

Jerry Yeast, a long-time friend of the couple, said, "I've recognized these two females all my life, and let me tell you, they are special." Yeast further mentioned that he got to know the two women while he was working in their yard as a teenager.

Iowa began allowing gay marriage in 2009. However, there is still discord concerning the ongoing movement for equality for gays and lesbians in Iowa. According to USA Today, the three justices who legalized same-sex marriage five years ago lost their jobs because of it.

When justices Marsha Turnus, Michael Streit, and David Baker faced reelection in 2010, they were met by a backlash-fueled campaign. However, they continued their careers as attorneys and continue to stand up for independence, allowing women like Dubes and Boyack to be as happy as they are today.
