Square Enix Unveils ‘Dive In’ Game Streaming Service: ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ and ‘Final Fantasy VII’ Among First Games To Be Offered, Can U.S. Fans Expect The Service Anytime Soon?

More video game news has been released ahead of the 2014 Tokyo Game Show, this time by Square Enix. Today, the popular game company unveiled their Dive In cloud gaming service. The games will be slated for mobile platforms such as smartphones and tablets, and will be available for both the Apple and Android market. The first titles to be included are "Final Fantasy XIII" and the international version of "Final Fantasy VII." While the service is currently only going to be available in Japan, is there a chance for a U.S. offer?

Kotaku reports: "Tokyo-based game maker Square Enix is rolling out its own cloud-based streaming service called Dive In. Dive In is slated for iOS and Android and will kick off next month by offering three games: ‘Final Fantasy VII International', ‘Final Fantasy XIII', and murder mystery game ‘Season of Mystery: The Cherry Blossom Murders'."

Anime News Network adds that, "Square Enix will then offer ‘Final Fantasy VIII' and ‘The Last Remnant' in November. Next, it will offer ‘Final Fantasy XIII-2' and ‘Murdered: The Soul Suspect' in December, followed by ‘Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII' and other titles next year." All the games will be available for 30 minutes of free game play and afterward will cost depending on the number of days the user wants access.

No announcement of availability outside of Japan has been made, but based on how rapidly the new service is being rolled out, there's a good chance it may come to the states. Contrary to this however, fans in the comment section of Kotaku's coverage believe this project could be headed for failure. The popular opinion seems to be that the pay-for-play service will overcharge customers in the long run. In that sense, maybe a U.S. debut will be out of the question if it bombs in Japan.

The 2014 Tokyo Game Show is only a couple of more days away. So far it looks like there will be plenty of things to look forward to for both those lucky enough to attend, and those patiently waiting for announcements from the video game giants that use the show to preview their activities over the next months. Here's hoping that in addition to this Dive In announcement, Square Enix will announce something about Final Fantasy XV.
