Anne Rice’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Erotic Series Licensed By Televisa USA: ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Producer Rachel Winter Attached, Series To Rival ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Film?

It's a busy time for novelist Anne Rice as in addition to her recent deal for the "Vampire Chronicles," she will also be working on a possible TV series for her erotic "Sleeping Beauty Trilogy." Today it was announced that Televisa USA has purchased the English language TV rights. Anne Rice will partner with recent Oscar nominated producer Rachel Winter, and some may be wondering how the series might hold up against the wildly popular "Fifty Shades of Grey" film due out next year.

According to Deadline, "Televisa USA has acquired the English-language television and digital rights to Anne Rice's best selling ‘The Sleeping Beauty' series of erotic novels. Rice will executive produce with Oscar-nominated producer Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club); Endemol North America Co-Chairman-CEO Charlie Corwin (Half Nelson); and former CAA motion picture literary agent-turned-producer Jessica Matthews."

For those wondering why they never came across the series before, it may be due to the fact that they were published in the 80s and under Anne Rice's pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure. Nevertheless, the trilogy features Sleeping Beauty waking from her slumber and going on a much different journey than one would expect in a fairytale, as reported by Variety.

But if the series gets off the ground, how will it do next to "Fifty Shades of Grey?"

The first problem may be that it's television and not film. Despite Televisa CCO Michael Garcia believing that "Game of Thrones" has paved the way for more provocative television, Rice's novel involves domination and submission on a more overt scale. She even states, "I wrote this to be fun, in the belief that dominance and submission can be romantic and delightful as well as erotic," as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

Whether the series adaptation makes it to networks may depend on how "Fifty Shades of Grey" does in theaters next year. Nevertheless, this deal perhaps can assure fans of erotic novels that more favorites might be coming to either film or TV in the upcoming months.
