‘Divergent’ Star Theo James Cast For Lead Role In ‘Underworld’ Reboot: New ‘Underworld’ Film To Be An Expansion, Release Possible In 2016?

Most "Underworld" fans probably don't remember, but "Divergent" actor Theo James is a veteran to the popular vampire franchise. Although he played a vampire named David in "Underworld: Awakening," he has just been cast in the lead role for the upcoming reboot of the franchise. The studio responsible has also just released new information regarding the film, which they claim is not a reboot as much as it is an expansion on the world. They've also announced that production will begin in the spring. Does this mean fans will get to revisit the "Underworld" by 2016?

"There was an option on James because of his work on the previous film," sources told The Hollywood Reporter in their announcement that the young "Divergent" actor was picked for the lead role. They went on to explain some new details about the film, including that unlike previously thought, the film "is not a reboot but rather an expansion of the existing universe."

The "Underworld" reboot/revision project was announced at the end of August after newbie screenwriter Cory Goodman was reported to be attached. It looks like he's churned the script out in record time as the production is already moving forward with casting and planning to shoot the film in early spring. Does that open up the possibility for a 2016 release?

It may be a bad move to delay the film's release until summer of 2016, purely based on the fact that competition is already steep. The "Batman V Superman" film is already expected to rule the summer along with openings from "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Finding Nemo" sequel, "Finding Dory." Depending on the budget, the new "Underworld" might be able to rush toward theaters by the end of 2015, but no date has been officially confirmed as of yet.

Although the new "Underworld" film still has far to go in the development process, it would appear that Lakeshore Entertainment isn't wasting any time.
