Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed's dating story did not have a smooth beginning. Despite their bliss, some were quick to express their dismay for Somerhalder's decision to go out with the "Twilight" actress.

However, in his recent Twitter post, the "Vampire Diaries" actor praised his fans for their concern to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. Founded in 2010, the foundation aspires to "empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures."

 "Just looking @ these again-wow. @IS_Foundation Medical Emergency Grant success stories frickin rule," he wrote recognizing the overwhelming accomplishments of the ISF's cause.

Even if Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed's relationship faced online backlash, the former "Lost" actor acknowledged the importance of online resources in spreading the word about ISF's goals.

 "I'm really and truly so grateful for you all. Social media has brought us the ability do so much... Whoa- it's bada*s.You rock. Seriously," he wrote.

Recently, the 35-year-old actor defended his 26-year-old girlfriend from bashers.

"You HATE NIKKI REED? Really? Do you know her? Hmmmm, I'm not sure that you do. Look on her Instagram feed or twitter and all you will see is a compassionate and beautiful human being. Please put your negative energy elsewhere. You don't even know the person you're talking about," he wrote on Instagram.

"Do you care about me? Ask yourself that question. What's the answer? Is it yes? If it is-then please be happy for me. Stop this nonsense-you're spreading horrible energy into the world. Do some research of the person you say sucks or you HATE. You'll find that she's a magical person doing great things in the world," added Nina Dobrev's former boyfriend.

Somerhalder also said that he's "sickened" and "saddened" with how his so-called fans responded to his new relationship with hurtful comments.
