Rihanna Twitter War With CBS: 'Stay' Singer Blasts Network Over NFL Song

CBS and the NFL caused some controversy last week, when they decided to pull a song featuring Rihanna from their Thursday Night Football pregame show in the wake of the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal, instead opting to use the time slot to host a somber discussion about the incident. The network had said they would resume their regular programming, including the intro song this week, but the singer would have not of it. She took to Twitter to voice her displeasure, and the situation quickly escalated, with CBS announcing that they would scrap the song altogether.

When CBS announced that they were pulling “Run This Town” – a collaboration between the Rihanna and Jay Z – from last week’s broadcast, some felt that they were punishing the pop star for her own history as a domestic violence victim at the hands of Chris Brown. Their explanation that inclusion of the song would not set an “appropriate tone” did not sit well with many, including the singer. On Tuesday she tweeted, “CBS you pulled my song last week, now you wanna slide it back in this Thursday? No, F*ck you! Y’all are sad for penalizing me for this!”  She later added, “The audacity.”

Later in the day, CBS fired back, announcing they would heed her words and cut the song from their programming altogether. In a statement the network said, “Beginning this Thursday, we will be moving in a different direction with some elements of our ‘Thursday Night Football’ open. We will be using our newly created Thursday Night Football theme music to open our game broadcasts.”

Now, word has come from Rihanna’s camp that Jay Z’s record company, Roc Nation, actually the told the network they couldn’t have the song. A rep for the singer told TMZ, “Due to misuse and misrepresentation of Rihanna’s name and participation in connection to CBS TNF, CBS was not allowed to license and utilize the song ‘Run This Town.’ Roc Nation made the decision not to grant the song’s usage.” In other words, because the singer’s name was used to promote the show in a way that she’s not happy with, the company pulled the network’s previously granted right to use the song in their broadcast. Neither CBS nor the NFL has commented on this latest development.
