First Photo Of Aaliyah Biopic Revealed: Alexandra Shipp To Star ‘Rock The Boat’ Songstress In Lifetime Movie, Receives Well Wishes From Zendaya After Casting Controversy

The first look at the Lifetime Network's Aaliyah biopic has finally arrived. And its star, Alexandra Shipp, has definitely nailed the appearance of the late "Rock the Boat" singer.

"She was the princess of R&B and now her story is being told. #AaliyahMovie premieres Saturday, November 15," tweeted Lifetime on Thursday.

The network's film, "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" has been highly anticipated by fans of the singer, who was tragically killed in a plane crash at the age of 22.

Alexandra Shipp, best known for her role in Nickelodeon's drama mystery series "House of Anubis," will be tackling the lead role, no doubt a difficult task since Aaliyah is still revered by legions of fans over ten years after her sudden death.

There was controversy surrounding the project when it was first announced. Disney star Zendaya was originally cast as the singer but left the project after an outcry from some fans that she was unfit for the part.

However, Zendaya insisted that the critical fans were not the cause of her departure.

"Let me just explain something," she said in a series of videos posted to Instagram. "The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn't do it, I wasn't talented enough, or I wasn't black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that."

"The main reasons were the production value wasn't there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn't being handled delicately considering the situation," continued the actress. "I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so. Therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project."

Zendaya made sure to wish Shipp well, however, when the casting change was announced.

"Congratulations to the new woman playing Aaliyah," Coleman said on Instagram. "I only hope that she does not have to deal with half the hate that I had to deal with. Remember that we are all human beings trying to do what we love to do. Let's practice motivation and love, not discrimination and hate."
