Black-ish Premieres; ABC SitCom Gets Mixed Reviews

"Black-ish" premiered on Wednesday and the show garnered mixed reviews for its first episode.

The ABC comedy "Black-ish" introduced a different perspective about being a well-to-do black family.

In the first episode, viewers meet Andre Johnson, played by Anthony Anderson, and his family. Andre works in advertising and his wife is an anaesthesiologist. They have two smart children.

As the premiere episode unfolded, viewers learned about the family's racial struggles, most of which were felt by Andre.

In the introductory voice-over, Andre explained how his success makes him question a lot of things. "I guess for a kid from the 'hood, I'm living the American dream," he said. "The only problem is, whatever American had this dream probably wasn't where I'm from. And if he was, he should have mentioned the part about how when brothers start getting a little money, stuff starts getting a little weird."

Variety dubbed the show "a good idea" that wasn't executed successfully.

Meanwhile, David Weigand of SF Gate wrote "Like 'The Cosby Show,' to which is inevitably compared, "Black-ish" balances credible family situatioins with universally appealing comedy. The pilot episode may be a discussion of ethnic identity, but for all the seriousness of that topic, it's a very funny discussion."

Time magazine's James Poniewozik described it as "something more complicated - [it's] about wanting to find that place where you're not defined by your race, yet your culture doesn't become irrelevant."

Robert Bianco of USA Today shared his two cents about the pilot episode, saying: "Perfection is rare in a sitcom pilot and 'Black-ish' doesn't achieve it. While the big set pieces are very funny, there are too many lulls between them. But odds are you'll come away believing the show will get better and hoping it does - because TV will be all the better for it."

The show was created by Kenya Barris and produced by Cinema Gypsy, Landmark Artists Management, Philosopher Stone and Principato-Young with ABC Studios.
