PopStar Masumi Puts a Disco Beat Behind a Girl Power Anthem in `Girls Make The World Go Round’ [VIDEO]

"From Miami Beach to L.A., New York City to Montego Bay, PopStar Masumi sings, "Girls Make the World Go Round" and the Japanese born rising pop star wants them all to dance, "laugh and have fun," just like Cyndi Lauper advised in the 80s.

PopStar Masumi released her new single "Girls Make The World Go Round," earlier this week. The singer promises "a rousing girl power disco-esque anthem for the empowered women of the world. A Cindy Lauper, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" for the 21st Century', but more reflective of female contributions to our modern society."

Child prodigy PopStar Masumi was born Masumi Yamamoto in Niigata, Japan. Blessed with the auditory phenomenon of perfect pitch, she began studying piano when she was four and wrote her first original composition when she was six. Masumi's father influenced her musical direction by playing a lot of "Soul Train" era rhythm and blues and urban American music around the house when she was a kid.

Masumi enrolled at the Yamaha Music School for advanced classes, practicing three hours a day, and competing four times a year. Masumi also had to write an original composition every year. She added the cello to her repertoire when she was still in elementary school and drums and xylophone when she was in junior high school.

By the time Masumi got to high school, she added moves to her beat, joining dance club and moving to the rhythms of Aaliyah, TLC and Boyz II Men.

When PopStar Masumi was 19, she headed off by herself to New York City where she studied American music, but not in class. Masumi spent night after night at Harlem's famous Apollo Theater.

After a brief return to Japan, Masumi enrolled at the California College of Music in Los Angeles where a teacher was knocked out by her music and passed her demo around to people he knew in the music business. Masumi signed with the Fortress USA record label. PopStar Masumi's single for the label "Slow Down" reached #4 in the Billboard Magazine Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Single Sales Chart.
