The offbeat Marvel superhero film "Guardians of the Galaxy" may have dominated the U.S. box office and been the summer's highest grossing film, but for Japanese fans, it's still all about the samurai.

In the latest numbers from the Japanese box office, the live-action adaptation of the popular manga "Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends" continues it's reign at the number one spot in its second week. "Guardians of the Galaxy" however fell from its opening position in third down to fifth of the past weekend.

Actor Takeru Satoh recently talked to Otaku Mode about his experience on the sets of the "Rurouni Kenshin" live action films: "They created a great environment through the art and the costumes. Also the shooting schedule. We were given ample time to prepare and we were able to work with the best crew. To put it simply, in the Japanese film industry, it's difficult to invest this much money into a production. Within that, we were able to take on this big project."

Allegedly Japanese critics praised the actor's performance so it's clear that a good environment breeds good performances. Moreover, since both "Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno" and "Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends" opened at number one in the Japanese box office, a good set environment leads to good performances, which ultimately leads to good box office performance.

Apparently the legend continues as this past weekend "Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends" remained number one in the box office. It's current gross is $2.7 million according to Box Office Mojo. Sadly, "Guardians of the Galaxy" fell from its opening number three spot to number five, grossing $5.2 million so far in Japan. It's probably not a big deal to Disney and Marvel however, since the film has grossed over $600 million worldwide.

Although Warner Bros. could easily distribute the films in the U.S., no official announcement has been made as to whether U.S. fans of "Rurouni Kenshin" can expect the film in theaters anytime soon. Until then, they can still catch "Guardians of the Galaxy" or attempt to fly to Japan just for the purpose of seeing "Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends" on a big screen without English subtitles.
