Jessica Chastain Reveals She Feels Depressed When Not Working: ‘Interstellar’ Actress Admits To Second Guessing Herself

Jessica Chastain prefers to keep things simple.

The 37-year-old actress told Harper's Bazaar that she rather not be the center of attention and likes to spend her time devoting herself to work. In fact, the "Interstellar" star revealed that when she is not immersed in a role, she sometimes feels depressed.

"Probably there are some people who feel great about themselves and don't second-guess anything they say or do or wear. But that's just not me," Chastain told Harper's Bazaar in an interview for the magazine's November issue.

'really takes a toll... If you're doing something dark, when you leave, part of you is going to be empty.'

Chastain, who rose to fame in 2011 after she starred in several films including "The Help" and "The Debt," has been working non-stop for the past several years. When the actress finally took a break to collect herself, she admits that going back to her simple life wasn't easy.

"[It felt] a little bit like grief and I started to feel really negative about myself, down on who I am, and then I realized it's because I've had so much time away from me that I don't really know what I like to do any more," explained Chastain. "I'm out of it now, but there was this feeling of being sad or depressed...wanting to go to another project."

Despite the occasional feelings of depression when a role ends, Chastain feels that acting brings balance to her life.

"I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't acting," said the actress, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2012 for her lead role in the film "Zero Dark Thirty."

"It doesn't mean I have to be in movies or have success," added Chastain. "I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have this form of expression because it offers me a freedom I don't have in my personal life."
