Jan Hooks Dead At 57 As Fans Send Payed Their Respects To The Former SNL Star On Twitter!

Comedienne, actress best known for her her work on NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL), Jan Hooks has died. She was 57.

Hooks agency confirmed that the actress died early Thursday of an undisclosed cause.

Hooks was a repertory player from 1986 to 1991 and during her five-year stint as an SNL regular, she joined Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, Chris Farley, Dennis Miller, and her fellow Sweeney Sister, Nora Dunn in an ensemble. She continued making cameo appearances until 1994.

Her subsequent work included a recurring role on 3rd Rock from the Sun, regular role on the final two seasons of Designing Women and numerous other roles in films and television. Hooks' last credited on-screen work was on 30 Rock.

Some of the films, Hooks appeared in includes Tim Burton's Batman Returns and, most notably, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. She even delivered one of the movie's catchphrases, "There's no basement in the Alamo!"

Hooks also did voice work, most popularly as The Simpsons' Manjula, Apu's wife (although Hooks was later replaced by Tress MacNeille).

Hooks was born and grew up in Decatur, Georgia, east of Atlanta in 1957. An AP interview from 1991 revealed Hooks worked in dinner theater and also with the New Wits End Players comedy group before she made it big. When she first auditioned for SNL, she was deemed "too old" according to TV Guide. Hooks later joined the cast during a major talent shakeup.

Following her death, Jon Lovitz, her SNL co-star issued her statement:

"This is very, very sad news about Jan. She was easily one of the best comedic actresses to be on SNL. Whenever she and Phil Hartman worked together, it was magic. As Jim and Tammy Faye Baker on 'Church Chat' with Dana Carvey, the three of them created one of the best sketches, ever, in the history of SNL. She was terrific to work with and a very, very nice person. I will miss her very much. Peace and prayers to her family and friends."

Twitter was full of best wishes from her fans and remembrances. Many mentioned their favorite characters and performances though many of her comedy companions kept it simple.
