Tesla Model D: Elon Musk's Newest Electric Car Has An 'Autopilot' Function; All Wheel Drive Version Has Two Electric Motors And Faster Acceleration [PHOTO]

Tesla Motors chief executive Elon Musk has just unveiled the new Tesla 'D,' a supercar featuring twin engines and the all-wheel-drive version of its model S electric car. According to The Register, Model D was launched at an event in Los Angeles this past Thursday, where Musk explained that the 'D' stands for the car's dual electric motors.

Though it features the name 'D,' the new model is actually called the Model S P85D. It has one electric motor in its front and another in its back, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just over three seconds, making it one of the fastest-accelerating sedans to ever hit the road.

During Thursday's event, Musk stated that the car's software "dynamically shifts power from front to rear at millisecond level." He argued that its software is even better than most all-wheel-drive systems, because it directs power to where it is needed and when it is needed, leaving the Model D "inherently able to do better road holding than cars with a single engine."

He also said that the Model D operates in three modes: "normal, sport, and insane," and compared owning the car to having a personal roller coaster. He commented, "Two drive units where we can shift the power and constantly be at the optimal efficiency for each motor means we can overcome the extra mass... Everything improves about the car with dual motors. It is like having your own personal roller coaster you can use at any time."

Before the Model D was released, there were many rumors circling that it could self-drive. This is not entirely the case, but the Independent reports that it does have autonomous functionality, meaning the car can read speed limit signs, warn the driver if they're drifting from their lane, brake to prevent collision, change lanes when the turn signal is activated, and even park itself after the driver has gotten out. Tesla's twitter has called this function "Autopilot."

The vehicle is said to cost between $89,000 and $120,000.
