American Actress Angelina Jolie Given Rare Damehood Honor By Queen Elizabeth

Many have honored actress Angelina Jolie's humanitarian work, and Queen Elizabeth gave the latest honor to her on Friday, US Magazine reported.

Jolie now joins the likes of actresses Judi Dench, Julie Andrews and Helen Mirren after being bestowed with an honorary dame accolade by the British royalty.

However reports say, Jolie's honor is rare for an American actress since most of the actresses bestowed with the female knighthood were British.

According to the Sundance TV, actresses such as Dench, Mirren and Andrews were bestowed with the honor " for services to the performing arts."

Jolie's damehood makes her even more special, although she is also an award-winning actress, she was rewarded "for services to the United Kingdom's foreign policy and for campaigning to end sexual violence in war zones," Sundance TV reported.

The Time Magazine reported that Jolie was honored for her humanitarian works specifically her campaign against rape in war-torn areas.

The title of Honorary Dame Grand Cross, the reports say is a female knighthood.

Jolie met the queen at the Buckingham Palace where she was given with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.

Accompanying Jolie was her husband Brad Pitt and their six children.

US Magazine quoted Jolie saying after she was given the insignia by the Queen, "\to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," Jolie said. "Working on PVSI and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."

Jolie made the Queen's list in June but because she is not a British citizen, Jolie cannot use the formal title Dame but can write DCMG after her name.
