What should we look forward to for tonight's episode and the rest of the first season of this exciting new series? Warning: spoilers ahead!

According to almost all preliminary reviews, the show is sure to be a hit. Vicki Hyman at NJ.com claims the show deserves a big fat A grade rating for its potential to be one of the fall season's best new TV shows. She explains, "'The Affair' seems, at first glance, to be a more modest tale of infidelity told in flashbacks, but soon blooms into something almost as sinister. It turns out both participants are sharing their often disparate recollections of the affair with a detective investigating a crime left tantalizingly unclear. Dominic West stars as Noah Solloway, a married teacher and fledgling novelist raising four children in a handsome Brooklyn brownstone - underwritten by his overbearing father-in-law Bruce (John Doman, who clashed memorably with West on "The Wire"). Bruce, a wildly successful popular novelist, owns a Montauk estate at which Noah and his family are summering, much to Noah's discomfort. ("Everyone has one book," Bruce tells him dismissively after inquiring about Noah's novel. "Almost nobody has two.") Ruth Wilson (like West, also from across the pond, and their American accents are the only occasional weak spots of this production) is Alison, a diner waitress who married into a large local ranching clan who has a tragedy in her past. She sparks with Noah when he and his family stop by the diner for lunch, and his daughter nearly chokes to death. In less steady hands, I'd be worried about this tricky narrative structure. But the show, which debuts tonight at 10 p.m., was created by Sarah Treem (a writer and producer of "In Treatment" and "House of Cards") with "In Treatment" creator Hagai Levi, and the premiere episode is riveting - the best pilot I've seen this fall. (That admittedly is not saying much.) Told first from Noah's point of view, Ruth is the aggressor, all long legs and come hither glances in her tight uniform. But in small ways (the length of her uniform, for one) and large (who actually saved Noah's daughter's life), the story shifts shape in Ruth's hands. Do you find more Noah or Ruth a more trustworthy source, or do you split the difference? Abandon passivity, all ye who enter here."
