The Mortal Instruments Sequel Scrapped; Book-To-Film Adaptation Of YA Novel To Be Remade For TV

Following the unimpressive performance of its first installment at the box office, the  "Mortal Instruments" sequel, the supposed last of its franchise will not be shown on cinemas.

But fans of the franchise based on the bestselling young adult fantasy series by Cassandra Clare need not feel bad as the "Mortal Instruments" sequel will instead be made for TV, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Constantin Film, the German production house who controls the rights to Clare's franchise, reportedly planned to continue the series as a feature film but decided to do otherwise when the previous installment which starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell did not fare well at the box office.

Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz announced the news at the launch of another TV series, "Shades of Guilt" in Cannes. Moszkowicz explained the production outfit's plan regarding the young adult series.

"We are moving rapidly," Moszkowicz shared. "Constantin has a lot of feature film brands and we are moving them into television. For instance, we own the rights to the book series 'The Mortal Instruments,' and we just hired a showrunner in Los Angeles, and our offices in Los Angeles and Canada are starting production next year on at least two or three international shows."

The spin-off will reportedly be led by showrunner Ed Decter, whose previous works include "Helix," "The Client List" and "Unforgettable.

Moszkowicz also shared the idea of the series being more fit for TV than film. He said, "It actually makes sense to do [the novels] as a TV series. There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the [film]. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth."

The first of the "Mortal Instruments" series subtitled "City of Bones" was shown on cinemas but failed to do well at the box office, prompting the production of what should have been the "Mortal Instruments" sequel, "City of Ashes," to be shelved.
