Jennifer Lawrence And Bradley Cooper “Serena” Film Hated By Critics, Call The Period Piece ‘A Disaster’

"Serena," which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, finally debuted at the London Film Festival over the weekend, and while critics don't have much to say about the stars' individual performances, it is clear the film won't be winning any kind of awards anytime soon.

"Jennifer [Lawrence] was attached to it when we were doing 'Silver Linings.' And then I looked at it, and I knew Susanne [Bier], and it was, 'Why don't we just do this together?'" said Bradley Cooper in an interview (via Indiewire) back in September.

At that time he had called "Serena" a fluke, almost an accident, seemingly because of how it happened. After practically two years of scandalous post production, it almost seemed that anyone hoping for "Serena" to make the Oscar 2015 cutoff date would have hopes that yielded little in payoff. "Serena" finally debuted at the London Film Festival (without either opening or closing credits) and so far the reception has been largely negative.

In fact, the reception has been so negative that Crushable actually compiled eight separate reviews that are so harsh they're "cringe-inducing." By far, the worst thing said about the film is arguably the review from The Movie Waffler. They called "Serena" a full blown "disaster."

A more convincing perspective however is what Variety had to say about the third Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper collaboration: "An arrestingly nihilistic Depression melodrama, marked by courageous performances and exquisite production values, this story of a timber-industry power couple undone by financial and personal corruption nonetheless boasts neither a narrative impetus nor a perceptible objective. The result is both problematic and fascinating, an unsympathetic spiral of human tragedy that plays a little like a hand-me-down folk ballad put to film. It's not hard to see why a U.S. distributor has been slow to step forward."

Speaking of distribution, the film ultimately secured a VOD release in February 2015. A February release might help redeem "Serena" monetarily with its proximity to Valentines Day. There's little to hope for however when even Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper can't make your film avoid being called a "disaster."
