World’s Smartest Electric Car: Tesla Model S Unveiled W/ Autopilot Option; All Wheel Drive Can Go From 0 To 60 MPH In 3.2 Seconds

The world’s smartest electric car, the Tesla Model S, has just become smarter. It now has a D-option, which enables it to run on an all-wheel-drive mode that can go from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.2 seconds.

According to CNET, the Autopilot hardware for the vehicle includes forward-looking radar and camera, fused with an all-around long-range ultrasonic sensor. There is also a software update being sent out to Tesla Model S cars OTA, allowing driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated parking.

"This car is nuts. It's like taking off from a carrier deck," Musk said at an event held late Thursday night in Los Angeles at a municipal airport, ABC reports. The launch of the new features was held at the same place where Musk's commercial space firm, SpaceX, is based.

"It's like having your own personal roller coaster that you can use at any time," Musk said of the company's latest electric car during the presentation.

Gizmodo reports that while the Tesla vehicles are in Autopilot, the car can read traffic signs like stop signs or lights, or speed limits, keeping the driver and passengers within the realm of safety and traffic regulations.

Though the Autopilot update does not make the Tesla vehicles self-driving, it offers a huge level of drive assistance, giving driver and passengers better information when making decisions and as Gizmodo writes, “stepping in to save your ass if you’re not paying attention.”

A short test-drive at the event show the Tesla Model S’ front camera recognizing speed limits and adjusting its speed accordingly, CNET reports. The car also self-steered, following curving lanes, and braked for stopped traffic ahead. The vehicle’s new capabilities show very advanced forms of adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

The D Option will be available on the 60, 85, and P85 Model S variants.
