"The Following" season 3 spoilers reveal that catching Joe Carroll is only the beginning as fans will have to take close attention to flashbacks to better understand the series.

Cast Kevin Bacon dished "The Following" season 3 spoilers to Fuse TV as he said that the capture of Joe Carroll, the arch-nemesis of Ryan Hardy, will trigger a series of events that will have an impact on all characters.

"What we find out this year is that Joel was just the tip of the iceberg. The basis of the show was what if a serial killer had a whole network of serial killers?" he said. "Obviously, we couldn't sustain that for three, four, five years. There has to be something bigger than Joel and that's what we find out this year."

Executive producer Marcos Siega, meanwhile, teased "The Following" season 3 spoilers to Buddy TV as he said that flashbacks will play a crucial role for the show going forward.

"We're going to go back to what the pilot did, which was, if we have to fill in the story to make it clear, we'll go to flashbacks," he said.

"What we're going to do this year is really test whether or not they can get past some of the hurdles that are going to be thrown at them, but in a way that we haven't done in the past," he added. "This year, they're dealing with the sins of the past. All the things that they've done in season 1, season 2, are kind of going to come back to haunt them."

The showrunner also said that even if they are trying to step away from the Joe Carroll storyline, the character will still loom large in the third season.

"The dynamic of why we need Joe and the challenges of how we're going to see Joe have not changed at all. It's really the transition out of Joe," he explained more of "The Following" season 3 spoilers.
