'American Horror Story' Angela Bassett Discusses Directing Whitney Houston Biopic Movie In Face Of Criticism: ‘I Was Just Mesmerized By Her Talent’

Angela Bassett is standing by her Whitney Houston biopic.

The "American Horror Story" actress, who starred with Houston in "Waiting To Exhale," is defending her choice to direct the Lifetime Network movie, entitled "Whitney," in spite of criticism from some of the late singing legend's family members and fans.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, 56-year-old Angela Bassett, who will be making her directing debut with "Whitney," addressed her decision to take on the project.

"I did spend a little time [with] her, but to know her intimately, intimately -- I mean, who does but the person and the Lord they serve? Who knows a person? But I know a little about being in the spotlight, a little about celebrity and its demands, a little about trying to find a mate and the support that's needed in your industry -- mine being acting, hers [the] music industry," said Bassett. "I know about being a woman, about being a black woman that came up in a little hometown ... and yet you are able to become a success because of this God-given gift or talent. So I know a little bit about what it might have been like."

The television biopic will focus on the tumultuous relationship between Houston and her former husband Bobby Brown.

Houston's mother, Cissy Houston told Entertainment Tonight that she was not happy with the television biopic.

"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family's objections. No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby," said Cissy.

Houston tragically passed away at the age of 48. In her interview with Huff Post Live, Bassett also revealed that she shared a special bond with the music superstar.

"I was just mesmerized by her talent. It was a delightful time. It was amazing to be around her because she had done Bodyguard and had broke through this glass ceiling of what a Sister was paid, what a woman was paid for starring in a movie," said Angela. "We just had a mutual admiration for each other and what we're both working on or doing or creating and we were just there for each other, the four of us, in the Sisterhood having a great time with a great director who just adored everything the four of us did."

Bassett, who currently stars in FX's "American Horror Story: Freak Show," also revealed that the four lead actresses from "Waiting to Exhale" had intended to make a sequel to their hit film before Houston's death.

"Us four ladies, [there] was hope we'd be able to do the sequel, then unfortunately her untimely passing made it really, really difficult to try to figure out how to tell the story," said Bassett.
