Christian Bale Criticized By Religious Writers For Labeling Moses In ‘Exodus: Gods And Kings’ As 'Barbaric' And Schizophrenic' In Interview

Christian Bale's description about his character Moses in an interview draws up a lot of attention and backlashing from Catholic writers as he labeled the mythic figure as 'barbaric' and 'schizophrenic'. The actor, said to have studied the scriptures in studying his character for the upcoming movie Exodus: Gods And Kings, shared his views in a group of reporters on Friday, the Huffington Post reports.

"I think the man was likely schizophrenic and was one of the most barbaric individuals that I ever read about in my life. He's a very troubled and tumultuous man who fought greatly against God, against his calling," he said during the interview.

In earlier press conferences with the Daily Mail participating in one of them, the Welsh actor still shared the same views.

"I think the man was likely schizophrenic and was one of the most barbaric individuals that I ever read about in my life. He was a very troubled, tumultuous man and mercurial. But the biggest surprise was the nature of God. He was equally very mercurial," he said.

The Batman actor's strong comments met a lot of philosophical comments.

One is from Jonathan Kirsch, the author who wrote "Moses: A Life" in 1999. In his response, the writer tried to provide 'another reading' of the Bible that may counterattack the actor's claims.

In an exclusive email for the Huffington Post, he said: "Mr. Bale is entirely correct to say that Moses, as depicted in the Bible, is shown to be capable of appalling violence and appears to have multiple personalities. Some pious readers continue to believe that a single flesh-and-blood human being is being described in all of his complexity," Kirsch said, "but another way of reading the Bible suggests that we have multiple versions of Moses because the Bible is the work of multiple authors who wrote at different times and places and with entirely different motives."

In another response from Christian blogger and screenwriter Brian Godawa, he wrote on his blog: "Yes, Moses murdered a man, and he had a character arc that went from being adopted and raised as a pagan Egyptian to a conversion to his troubled and tumultuous faith. He had difficulty trusting Yahweh. He didn't want to be God's spokesman because he stuttered. And he even had arguments with God.

But Schizophrenic? Barbaric? Really?"

Directed by Scott Ridley who previously said that religion is the cause of most world problems, the movie Exodus: Gods And Kings is set to be released on December 12 this year. Aside from Moses, Scott is also planning to come up with another religious film King David which derives inspiration from the "David and Goliath" story.
