Kelly Ripa is a firm believer that she is first and foremost a mother to her children, not their friend.

The 44-year-old "Live With Kelly and Michael" host discussed her relationship with her 13-year-old daughter Lola earlier this month during an interview on the "Wendy Williams Show" and revealed that the two don't always get along. In fact, the teen recently broke her parents' rules, prompting Ripa to implement a serious, but fair, punishment.

"I don't think she likes me, but I don't care. I'm like, 'I'm not your friend, I'm your mom,'" Ripa told Wendy Williams. "I just feel an obligation as her mom to keep her living in the real world. I don't care who you are or what you do, if you're a mom, you're a mom."

Ripa has three children with her husband Mark Consuelos: sons Michael and Joaquin, as well as daughter Lola. Consuelos was the first one to mention that Lola had gotten in trouble during an inteview with Williams the previous week. When Ripa was asked to elaborate on the matter, she explained that her daughter "broke the rules."

"We are like very fair parents and we will give you certain freedoms," said the television star. "When you want privacy in a not-private world-like, you can't have privacy and be on Instagram. I'm sorry, that's not how it works. Privacy is for if you want to write a letter or write in your journal, I'm not going to read that. But if you want to tweet about what a pain in the butt your mom is, I'm gonna see that."

According to Ripa, she punished Lola after catching her using her cell phone while she was supposed to be doing her Spanish homework.

"I walked into her room and she wasn't there, but there was her phone and it's not supposed to be there during study hours," explained Ripa. "So I was like," she mimed leaning over innocently, '"let me just dial in her code'...She knows I know her code, but she doesn't think I would ever abuse that privilege."

Ripa, who has been applauded for her parenting philosophy by many fans online, couldn't help but make the point it's really not okay for her daughter to slack in Spanish.

"I'm like, 'You're half-Mexican. Your grandmother is a Spanish teacher. You're not allowed to fail Spanish," she joked. "It's the one thing you're not allowed to fail!'"
