Amal Clooney Given Barabara Walters' Title Of Most Fascinating Person Of 2014; Lebanese Human Rights Lawyer Secures Spot Above Oprah Winfrey And Elon Musk [PHOTO]

Amal Clooney - formerly known as Amal Alamuddin before her marriage to George Clooney - has been named Barbara Walters' most fascinating person of 2014. Most people know very little about the Lebanese human rights lawyer, except for the fact that she was able to tie down one of the world's most determined bachelors.

Walters introduced Amal, "How do I introduce her? I guess the question is, 'What does it take to fascinate one of the most fascinating men in the world?' She is known primarily through her spouse, and while we know little about her, we know a great deal about him. And he has fascinated many women-especially me."

She continued, "Everyone said that no one would get George Clooney to the altar. In fact, George Clooney-who had been married briefly in his 20s-said it himself, to me, in 1995," explaining why she deemed Amal as having made "one of the greatest achievements in human history."

Maybe one of the reasons Amal was able to succeed was because she is different from all the rest of Clooney's former flings. Walters stated, "Like Clooney, she is passionately committed to human rights causes. Like Clooney, who has a father who was a journalist, she has a mother who is a journalist. And like Clooney, she is a star in her own world."

ABC News reports that Amal was born in Lebanon, and later moved to a London suburb with her family as a child. She ended up going to Oxford, got a law degree at NYU, and while in New York, clerked for then-federal judge Sonia Sotomayor. After returning to London, Amal became a well-known human rights attorney with clients such as Julian Assange and Kofi Annan. With all of those accomplishments in hand, no wonder Clooney himself was fascinated!

According to E! Online, the nine other people profiled in Walters' 2014 TV special were Scarlett Johansson, Neil Patrick Harris, David Koch, Oprah Winfrey, Chelsea Handler, Michael Strahan, Elon Musk, George R. R. Martin and Taylor Swift.
