After six years together, Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams have opted to end their marriage. Many were shocked because the pair, known for their penchant for privacy, appeared to be maintaining a peaceful union.

"Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams have mutually decided to end their marriage of almost 6 years. It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways and both Mandy and Ryan are asking for media to respect their privacy at this time," read the couple's joint statement as reported by Us Weekly.

Last March, Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams appeared to be having the time of their lives when they celebrated their fifth anniversary. The couple's goofy photos didn't show signs of marital woes.

The "A Walk to Remember" actress even shared an Instagram photo of their marriage license. The photo was captioned: "The best 5 years."

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams tied the knot on March 10, 2009 in an intimate affair in Georgia.

Last September, Ryan Adams was asked about his marriage to Mandy Moore and intentionally hung up on the interviewer. He later explained his reason for doing so.

"Okay, so I just hung up because I was on the radio getting asked about my wife. I was really nice about it the first time, and I'm sorry, but I won't repeat myself. The deal is this: I'm a private person and I'll be a gentleman and say I'm not talking about my marriage ever. I'll never talk about it. Ever," he told Buzzfeed.

The couple does not have a baby but in 2013, the "Cry" singer said that she'd want to have a family of her own. She also talked about the possibility of adopting a child.

"I definitely want a couple of my own [kids]," Moore told Life and Style magazine and later added, "but I'd like to adopt as well!"

Mandy Moore explains that adoption is good because "there are many children out there that need a nice loving home and future."
