Sorry Fans, 'Winds Of Winter' Release Date Won’t Be This Year; Prequel Novellas Drop Easter Eggs For ‘Game Of Thrones?’

The "Winds of Winter" release date won't likely happen this year, George R.R. Martin's publisher confirmed. But three prequel novellas will be out in October and fans can have fun looking at Easter eggs for "Game of Thrones."

HarperCollins publisher Jane Johnson said that thee prequel novellas called "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword" and "The Mystery Knight" will be released in illustrated collection titled "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" later this year.

In a report from The Guardian, Jane Johnson said that fans will definitely pick up some clues from the books which would tie up with the "Game of Thrones."

"The novellas are illustrated in black and white line drawings throughout by Gary Gianni in classic style. It will be a truly lovely book, and I adore these clever, funny stories," she said. "They give fascinating insights into the ongoing story, from the point of view of Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and his squire Egg - who may be rather more than he first seems."

"The short novels have been previously published in separate anthologies but never put together before, and this will be a particularly beautiful edition," Jane Johnson added.

As for the "Winds of Winter" release date for this year, she has some bad news.

"I have no information on likely delivery. These are increasingly complex books and require immense amounts of concentration to write," she said. "Fans really ought to appreciate that the length of these monsters is equivalent to two or three novels by other writers."

Previously, George R.R. Martin quashed all rumors surrounding the "Winds of Winter" release date. In a blog post, he urged fans not to believe all the reports as he will announce the official schedule on his blog.

"I've said before, and I will say again, I don't play games with news about the books. I know how many people are waiting, how long they have been waiting, how anxious they are. I am still working on WINDS," he wrote. "When it's done, I will announce it here. There won't be any clues to decipher, any codes or hidden meanings, the announcement will be straightforward and to the point."
