John Travolta, considered one of the most prominent Scientology members in Hollywood along with Tom Cruise, defended the group in light of the HBO documentary "Going Glear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief."

The "Forger" actor said that he has no plans of watching the HBO documentary on Scientology, which premiered March 29 on the cable network.

John Travolta told Tampa Bay that most of the criticisms leveled against Scientology are pure hearsay.

"I haven't experienced anything that the hearsay has (claimed), so why would I communicate something that wasn't true for me? It wouldn't make sense, nor would it for Tom, I imagine," he said, adding that "Going Clear" is obviously black propaganda made by "people who were disgruntled with their experiences."

"I've been so happy with my (Scientology) experience in the last 40 years that I really don't have anything to say that would shed light on (a documentary) so decidedly negative," he said.

"I've been brought through storms that were insurmountable, and (Scientology has) been so beautiful for me, that I can't even imagine attacking it."

Kelly Preston's husband has been hounded with rumors about his sexuality over the years.

John Travolta also said that through Scientology, he helped "so many people through hard times."

"Loss of children, loved ones, physical illnesses. Through many tough, tough life situations I've used the technology to support them and help them. It's always worked," the actor added.

"So, why would I even approach a negative perspective? That would be a crime to me, personally, to do that."

Scientology is laid bare by a film that skilfully knits together archive footage, testimonials from former high ranking officials and public, and dramatic reconstructions."
