Marvel CEO Does Not Believe In Female Superhero Movies; Read The Leaked Email Here!

A Marvel Entertainment CEO's email has been leaked and the contents allegedly reveal that he did not support movies with a female superhero as a lead.

Indiwire discovered an email in WikiLeaks, among those that were hacked from Sony's system. Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter sent an emailSony Executive Michael Lynton last August, and the letter detailed examples of how female-led superhero movies have all proven to be failures at the box office.

The email in its entirety reads at follows:

"Michael,

As we discussed on the phone, below are just a few examples. There are more.

Thanks,

Ike

1. Electra (Marvel) - Very bad idea and the end result was very, very bad. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=elektra.htm

2. Catwoman (WB/DC) - Catwoman was one of the most important female character within the Batman franchise. This film was a disaster. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=catwoman.htm

3. Supergirl - (DC) Supergirl was one of the most important female super hero in Superman franchise. This Movie came out in 1984 and did $14 million total domestic with opening weekend of $5.5 million. Again, another disaster.

Best,
Ike"

The context of the email is not known, but it has been speculated that Perlmutter was talking with Lynton about the feasibility of superhero movies with female leads.

"Sony owns the movie rights for Spider-Man and all Spider-Man-related Marvel characters, but Sony and Marvel Studios have had a decent creative relationship in recent years - so, presumably, Perlmutter was advising Lynton to be careful about crafting a superhero flick starring a woman," Vulture speculated.

The email has received harsh criticism from social media users after it leaked, and it did nothing but to further tarnish Pelmutter's reputation. It will be remembered that The Hollywood Reporter came out with a feature article that depicted the Marvel CEO as "secretive," "frugal," and "paranoid."

News agencies have tried to reach Marvel for a statement on the issue but the company had no comment.

In fact, Pelmutter was accused of demoting three female African-American executives in 2012 during the reorganization of Disney when Marvel came into the picture.
