James Cameron's Ambition Delays 'Avatar 2' Release Date? Director In No Hurry To Capitalize On Last Film's Success?

After the first movie held the distinction as the highest-grossing film of all time, James Cameron is not looking to cash in by rushing the release date of "Avatar 2."

James Cameron had said that there's going to be a delay in production of "Avatar 2," which means it will be released in Christmas 2017 or about a year than what was previously announced.

Released in 2009, "Avatar" went on to earn $2,787,965,087 at the worldwide box office with about half of the figure coming domestically.

James Cameron said, "There's nothing I need to say as an artist about the state of the world and human affairs that I can't do through the lens of the Avatar universe."

"We've had a couple of years to think through the story arc of the next three films, and every day that goes by, I believe in the stories I'm telling more and more. We're not coming out of the block fast to capitalize on the last film," he added.

In an earlier interview with ABC News, per Screenrant, James Cameron said that it's not easy working on the script for "Avatar 2."

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film."

He said that he and his team have been writing "Avatar 2" and the subsequent two sequels "simultaneously."

"And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments," he added.

The expected release date of "Avatar 3" is in 2018, or a year after "Avatar 2," while "Avatar 4" may be shown in 2019.
