Selena Gomez escaped an awkward encounter with Justin Bieber at the Met Gala with the help of her close pal Vanessa Hudgens.

The 22-year-old "I Want You to Know" singer avoided having to run-in with former boyfriend Justin Bieber at the New York event as they partied the night way with her girl friends including her "Spring Breakers" co-star.

With the help of girl friend Vanessa Hudgens, the singer rocked a Vera Wang white gown as she enjoyed the night without the annoyance of seeing the "Baby" hit maker.

A viewer of "Watch What Happens: Live with Andy Cohen" asked the "Spring Breakers" star if it was true that she protected her pal in the star-studded event, Perez Hilton said.

The "Highschool Musical" alumna said, "She's one of my best friends and you just want to have your girlfriend's back, so that's what I did."

The actress said. "We didn't, like, try to avoid him or anything. (But) I mean, no one really wants to see your ex-boyfriend. We had a lot of fun."

After the event, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber both attended Rihanna's after party where they reportedly exchanged some words but have spent the night with their respective circle of friends, E! Online said in their report.

In one video, Justin Bieber was caught shouting to the paparazzi, "Selena looked gorgeous at the Met Ball!"

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber dated on and off from 2010 before they ended their relationship last year, Philly.com said in a report.

After their split, the "Come & Get It" singer had a brief romance with German DJ Zedd but called they it off early last month.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber was linked to a number of girls, including the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star and supermodel Kendall Jenner.
