Emma Watson’s Feminism Strategy: ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Live-Action Star Pleads Case By Making It Men’s Concern Too; Uses Social Media To Further Cause

"Beauty and the Beast" live-action star Emma Watson's feminism strategy was not to alienate men into advancing women's cause but rather to bring them in as partners.

Jill Filipovic wrote for Cosmopolitan that Emma Watson did it by breaking down the stereotype about feminism being "marginal, outdated, unnecessary Girls Club."

"Feminist activism has been ongoing and dynamic for more than a century, and online feminism has brought the struggle for gender equality onto screens across the world, and it's mostly been a cause led by and purposed for girls and women - for good reason, given that girls and women are systematically oppressed the world over," Filipovic started.

"But, Watson made clear, men have a stake in this too, not only because lots of them are decent human beings, but because it benefits men to have more flexibility in their social roles, their work lives, and their families."

The plan of the "Beauty and the Beast" live-action star seemed to be working since on June 1, Emma Watson tweeted, "I believe that men in Iceland are increasingly recognizing that gender equality is a global human rights issue."

In Emma Watson's UN speech on the launch of the HeForShe campaign, the "Beauty and the Beast" live-action star urged men to lobby for gender equality because it is their issue, too.

"I've seen my father's role as a parent being valued less by society despite my needing his presence, as a child, as much as my mother's," she said. "I've seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a men-or less of a man."

"In fact, in the U.K., suicide is the biggest killer of men, between 20 to 49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I've seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don't have the benefits of equality, either," the actress said.
