Fox News Co-host Apologizes for Rape Comments

Fox News co-host apologizes for rape comment about rape on college campuses.  Co-Host Bog Beckel chimed in with his two cents during a roundtable.

The subject matter on the set of "The Five" was a proposal to ban concealed weapons on Colorado campuses. That changed quickly when Beckel jumped in with his remark.

"When was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?" Beckel told the roundtable. Of the four others in this discussion, Co-Host Eric Bolling responded. "What are you talking about?" he directed at Beckel. "It's rampant."

"Oh, it's rampant?" Beckel asked Bolling. Co-Host Dana Perino then said, "in particular, date rape on campus."

Beckel didn't stop. He continued with his point. "What are you going to take a gun out and shoot your date?" Beckel asked the panel.

Turmoil would ensue shortly after those comments.

Twitchy.com is a website operated by conservative blogger Michelle Malkin. He called Beckel a "cretinous misogynist."

The original debate sparked interest for this roundtable when

Democratic Colorado Rep. Joe Salazar commented on the state House Floor, supporting the ban. "It's why we have call boxes. It's why we have safe zones. That's why we have the whistles, because you just don't know who you're going to be shooting at. And you don't know if you feel like you're gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone's been following you around or if you feel like you're in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop ... pop a round at somebody."

Salazar was criticized for his remarks. He apologized and then Beckel did the same on his show the next day.

"It's a horrible, horrendous issue," he said. "Simply put, rape is rape--whether it's date rape or it's somebody coming in off the campus trying to rape somebody else. I very strongly feel that way. So, I just want to straighten the record out on that."

In 2010, the Department of Justice estimated that 25 percent of college women will be victims of rape or attempted rape before they graduate within a four-year college period.  Schools with more than 6,000 students, average one rape per day during the school year.
