Six Killed Bar Shooting in Cancun, Two Gunman Open Fire At Popular Vacation Destination

At least six were killed in a bar shooting on the outskirts of the Mexican resort area of Cancun Thursday.

Two gunmen barged into a bar and opened fire and The Telegraph reports the death toll at seven and said four others were wounded in the shooting at The Mermaid bar located several miles from Cancun's main tourist area. The initially reports six people killed in the shooting increased to seven as another individual has since died.

The gunmen were reported to be carrying a handgun and a "machine gun," according to Reuters.

Security concerns have increased at the news of the shooting comes as the popular tourist destination Cancun hosts thousands of college students from the United States on spring break.

Public Safety Secretary Jesus Aiza said most of the victims were members of a taxi drivers union, according to the Associated Press. Soldiers have been dispatched to the hospital to the injured victims are currently being treated as a cautionary measure.

Aiza said the gunmen arrived in two cars Thursday afternoon, went inside the bar and began shooting.

There is no known motive for the shooting in Cancun however the gunmen shot at drinkers who were members of a taxi union. It's unclear whether there's a connection at this point, however authorities are investigating.

Cancun has been somewhat able to keep its distance from the drug violence that has plagued the rest of Mexico. Mexico has been fighting to reduce violence within its borders as the government tackles drug cartels and the illegal drug trade.
