Race Car Kills 2 in Northern California Track, As It Slams Into Pit [VIDEO]

A race car kills 2 at the Marysville Raceway Park about 40 miles north of Sacramento during warm-up laps Saturday evening.

The car reportedly left the track and crashed into pit row, during so called "hot laps" about an hour prior to the actual race, the driver was going 90 mph and couldn't make a proper turn.

The incident killed two, a 14-year-old boy and 68-year-old man as they were walking in the pit area when a winged sprint car crashed into them. No other injuries were reported.

Yuba County Sheriff's Capt. Ron Johnson said the two were part of a crew, the man was pronounced dead at the scene while the boy was pronounced dead at a hospital. His parents were reported to be at the racetrack with him.

"It appears the driver had a stuck throttle," said Steven Blakesley, an announcer for sprint car races. He was at this race, however, as a spectator.

"There must have been a mechanical problem," Blakesley said. "The car didn't slow down."

"He hit the left side of an opening (of the wall) near the pit area, he hit two big tractor tires which sent him airborne."

"I thought he was hurt - the driver," Blakesley said. "And then (I) saw that two people were on the ground receiving CPR and people pumping on them.

"I would say it got very silent and very serious."

The track officials issued a statement on their Facebook page, "Our thoughts and deepest prayers go out to everyone. Out of respect we will not elaborate on details. We ask everyone to respect each other and the families."

The race on Saturday was the season opener for the California Sprint Car Civil War Series and organizers canceled the Saturday event shortly after the incident.
