Marathon Runner Dies of Heart Attack in Barcelona, Second Death In Competition This Week, Following Israeli Soldier in Tel Aviv

A marathon runner died of heart attack in Barcelona on Sunday, marking the second incident this month of a runner's death during competition.

The 47-year-old man reportedly fainted after crossing the finish line and received treatment immediately by Barcelona Red Cross before he was transferred to the city's Clinic Hospital where he shortly died.

The man, registered in the race as X.J. follow just three days after an Israeli soldier died of heat stroke Friday during a half-marathon in Tel Aviv.

The 29-year-old soldier Michael Michalevitch collapsed and was sent to a hospital however doctor's was unable to revive him. It was reported the temperature reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Associated Press. He was one of 50 runners that were treated from collapsing from the heat. Yitzhak Aharonovich, Israel's public security minister, said on Israel Radio that organizers should not have scheduled a marathon in such extreme temperatures.

Barcelona marathon officials released a statement stating, "The Catalan athlete who had completed the test in a time of 4:05:10 and participated through the AESE Running Club, was an expert popular runner.

"X.J. fainted after crossing the finish line of the Zurich Marató de Barcelona, being treated immediately by the unit of the Barcelona Red Cross. He was later transferred to the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, where he died later."
