Hospice Murder-Suicide In Lehigh Valley: Man Shoots 83-Year-Old Terminally Ill Wife Before Turning Gun On Himself

An 83-year-old woman and her husband were found in their hospice shot dead; police are investigating the deaths in the hospice as a murder-suicide. The elderly woman and her husband died in a hospice in Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, March 19.

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said there were no witnesses to the possible hospice murder-suicide.

Martin added that the man apparently shot and killed his wife, then killed himself.

The shooting was isolated to the hospice room, and "no other patients or staff were placed in jeopardy," Martin announced in a statement after the bodies had been found.

He continued, "Contrary to some rumors, this was not an active shooter situation."

No one witnessed the shooting, and the man didn't give any clues that he was about to harm his wife, commented police Captain Glen Dorney.

"The first thing that drew [the staff's] attention was the sound of the gunshot. They heard a second gunshot and came to investigate," Dorney explained.

When staff members entered the room where shots were fired, they found the woman dead in her bed and the body of a man.

The Hospital's website says patients can only enter the hospice unit with a diagnosis of a terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less.

Lehigh Valley Hospital, like most hospitals, doesn't use metal detectors on visitors, according to CBS News.

Chuck Lewis, the Vice President of External Affairs at Lehigh Valley Health Network, confirmed that the woman had been an inpatient in the hospice unit.

"This is a very tragic event, and our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and our Lehigh Valley Health Network colleagues who were involved," Lewis stated.

Authorities did not release the names of the couple, since their families hadn't yet been notified.
