Sinkhole Swallows Pond In ‘Gold Country’ California In 4 Hours; Geologist Thinks Mining Partially To Blame [VIDEO]

A sinkhole swallowed a pond on Sunday morning in Newcastle, California.

Homeowner Mark Korb woke up to see that a sinkhole had swallowed a pond in his backyard.

Korb was shocked that the pond had been completely drained away by the sinkhole. He told NBC News, "This looks like the moon.

The sinkhole drained the entire pond overnight, in a span of 4-5 hours, after breaking up the ground underneath it.

Korb built the pond himself, and explained that he had to drain the pond by hand in the past.

Korb was amazed at how fast the sinkhole was able to empty the pond, as it took him about seven days to drain the pond with a pump.

This report follows just weeks after a Florida sinkhole opened up under a Tampa home, swallowing the entire house and man inside it. The man has not yet been found and is considered deceased.

Sinkholes are often caused by groundwater washing away minerals, creating instability underground.

Sierra College geology professor Alex Amigo explained that the sinkhole that swallowed Korb's pond may be caused by mining in the area.

Korb lives in an area commonly known as 'Gold Country,' so extensive mining activities are conducted there.

The professor stated that there may have been a man-made cavity underground, and that the mining could have widened a pre-existing underground fracture. That fracture probably drained the pond's water quickly.
