Carnival Cruises Cancelled While Triumph, Sunshine Out Of Service Longer Than Expected

Carnival Cruise Line announced Tuesday an addition cruises have been canceled for Carnival Triumph and Carnival Sunshine. The current out-of-service for two of its cruise ships are expected to be extended.

The Carnival Triumph is expected to return to service on June 3, thus leading to additional 10 cruises to be canceled. The guests on those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable transportation costs and a 25 percent discount on a future four-to-five day cruise.

This comes after Carnival Triumph experienced a leak in fuel oil caused an engine-room fire last month, leaving the 4,200 people stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for five days.

Carnival Sunshine undergoing a complete scheduled full-ship makeover and will return to service on May 5, after the cancelation of two European cruises.

Gusts of the canceled Carnival Sunshine cruises will receive a full refund, plus reimbursement for any nonrefundable travel costs. Also a 25 percent discount on a future cruise.

The additional time allows the cruise line to make significant changes to enhance its backup systems and improve hotel services to run on emergency power, and further improve each ship's fire prevention, detection and suppression systems.

"We sincerely regret canceling these cruises and disrupting our guests' vacation plans," Carnival president and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a press release. "We are fully committed to applying the recommendations stemming from our fleet-wide review and to make whatever investments are needed despite the difficult decision to impact people's vacations."

"Our team of experts has worked virtually around the clock to determine the best set of solutions and rapidly develop an effective implementation plan for both of these ships," Cahill stated. "Moving forward, we will have the ability to source materials and schedule improvements much more expediently, thus minimizing the scheduling impact on other vessels."
