HBO Cancels Show Due To Low Ratings; Laura Dern, Mike White's 'Enlightened' Not Returning For Third Season

After much critical acclaim but low ratings HBO has decided to cancel its show Enlightened. The show was created by star Laura Dern and Mike White.

The comedy centers around Dern's character Amy Jellicoe, a high strung executive turned activist trying to get her California Corporation to behave more responsibly. Jellicoe comes to this environmental epiphany after she flips out and has to go to anger management.

The HBO show Enlightenment, which also stars Luke Wilson, earned Dern a Golden Globe for best TV comedy actress in 2012.

HBO released a statement saying, "It was a very difficult decision. We've decided not to continue Enlightened for a third season. We're proud of the show, and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

The Hollywood Reporter says Enlightened saw a ratings spike for the premier of the second season with 300,000 viewers. The season finale saw that number drop to 200,000.

One of HBO's most successful shows, Game of Thrones, will return for a third season on March 31. Game of Thrones stars Lena Headey, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke. The show centers around the war to see who will rule the seven kingdoms of Westeros and sit on the Iron Throne.

In June, the popular but not well criticized show The Newsroom will begin its second season. The Newsroom stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer and Sam Waterston. The show follows Daniels' characters Will Macavoy on his sometimes misguided "mission to civilize" the American media.
