Bob Newhart on 'The Big Bang Theory,' Guest Star in May, 'We're Really Excited About It'

Bob Newhart landed a gig to guest star on popular CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory" according to TVLine.

Newhart will play Professor Proton, the former host of Sheldon's (Jim Parsons) favorite science show as a kid.

The episode is scheduled to air Thursday, May 2.

"We're really excited about it," Steven Molaro, show producer said during the show's PaleyFest panel, according to NBC.

"We have a really great actor coming up," said Bill Prady, pointing out that unlike Wil Wheaton, Steven Hawking or Katee Sackhoff, for example, "He's not from the world of science or science fiction."

"The part he's going to play is someone (Sheldon and Leonard) loved when they were kids," added Molaro.

TVLine reports the storyline will feature Sheldon searching online of his favorite TV host, discovers that he can be hired for parties and events. So then books Professor Proton to come over to his house.

Newhart's most recent guest appearances on television include "NCIS" in 2011, "Desperate Housewives" in 2005, and "ER" in 2003.

The six-time nominee is best-known for "The Bob Newhart Show" that aired from 1972 to 1978 and "Newhart" that ran from 1982 to 1990.

"The Big Bang Theory" is currently airing its sixth season, with their seventh season already renewed, centers on a group of scientists and their respective girlfriends and wives.
