New Pepsi Bottle Shape In 17 Years; Will It Help Bolster Sales? [PHOTO]

The new Pepsi bottle in 17 years will be introduced soon, with a contoured bottom half for a stronger grip with shorter label to expose the drink.

The change of the 20-ounce bottle comes after various moves by PepsiCo to improve results for its namesake soda, such as a multiyear deal of sponsoring the Super Bowl halftime show and wide-ranging deal with pop star Beyonce.

PepsiCo Inc. has been working to revitalize the brand as it began to lose market share to Coca-Cola Co. in recent years.

A spokesperson said the new Pepsi bottle will hit stores in April, will be applied to Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Max and Pepsi Next. The glass bottle is available only for full-calorie Pepsi.

The new bottle will first appear in the New York area, then Chicago and part of California and Florida, the Associated Press reported.

"We started with single serve, because it is the package you're seen drinking and holding," explained Angelique Krembs, VP-marketing for the Pepsi trademark. "The longer-term view is this new design system would eventually hit all touch points beyond packaging, to be honest, but certainly all other package types, as it applies."

"We didn't want to create a shape that came out of nowhere," Ms. Krembs said. "It's not uniform, it's a little asymmetrical, there's a little edginess and playfulness, which is consistent with Pepsi's equities and youthful spirit."

"The engineers have to go to all the plants and convert the lines," Andrew Foote, PepsiCo spokeswoman said. She expects about a year or two to entirely replace the current bottles, which were introduced in 1996.
