Crash Kills 6 Suspected Illegal Immigrants After Police Chase; Truck Carrying 15 Crashes Into Kingsville Naval Air Station, Injuring 9

A car crash kills 6 suspected illegal immigrants in southern Texas Navy base on Wednesday, March 20.

The 6 people who were killed were traveling in a truck that crashed into a barrier at Naval Air Station Kingsville at about 11 pm, according to police in Kingsville who spoke to the Associated Press.

The crash killed 6, but 9 people were also injured in the accident.

Border patrol and police were chasing the truck, believed to be carrying 15 people. Ten of the fifteen were crammed inside the truck's cab while five were in the bed under a tarp, according to CNN.

Kingsville, Texas police were pursuing the truck on Wednesday night when the driver turned onto the road leading to the air station and sped past the guard posted at the entrance.

Spokesman of the Air Base Jon Gagne told the AP that the passengers and suspected illegal immigrants "were probably just looking for an escape route." Officials added that the truck did not appear to be trying to enter the base. Gagne noted that the road into the air station looks like any other local road, especially in the dark.

When the air station guard saw the truck's approach, he put his hand up to stop the truck but had to jump out of the way as it sped through, Gagne said.

As the truck sped through the checkpoint, base guards erected a pop-up barrier before the facility's next checkpoint to try to prevent the vehicle from getting through.

Gagne added, "That's exactly what the barrier is designed to prevent," referring to the driver's reckless driving. "It's quite possible this guy didn't even know where he was."

Department of Public Safety Senior Cpl. Charlie Ramirez told the AP that the driver is among the injured, although none of the victims have yet been identified. Information about the survivors' conditions is not currently available.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the victims were from Honduras and Guatemala and that the consulates had been notified. No officers or military members were injured in the accident.
