Freak Accident Kills 10-Year-Old-Boy; Crushed By Airport Sign

Luke Bresette was killed Friday afternoon at Alabama's Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport when a 300lb departure sign fell and killed the boy.

Luke Bresette was standing with his mother Heather and his two younger brothers Sam (8) and Tyler (5). All four people were injured when the departure sign fell but only Luke was killed.

Heather Bresette underwent surgery for two broken ankles and a broken pelvis last night. The Daily Mail lists her in critical condition. The two younger boys were injured but are in stable condition. Sam suffered a broken leg and Tyler got a concussion when the sign fell.

Both boys were treated at Children's Hospital of Alabama. The same hospital where their 10-year-old brother was pronounced dead. The boy's mother is being treated at UAB Hospital.

The accident occurred at 1:30pm Friday afternoon, the Bresette family was on their way home from Destin after a week vacationing for Spring break.

The departure sign that killed the boy pulled away from a newly renovated wall. The exact cause of the accident is yet unknown. A spokeswoman for the airport said they are launching an investigation as to why the board fell.

Ryan Bresette the boy's father, his older sister Anna and brother Joe were not injured when the sign fell. According to the Daily Mail, witnesses said the sign fell on top of the family as they were walking by. The Mail reports it took six men to lift the sign off of the family.

Later it took another twelve men to hold the sign up while rescue workers attended to the family.

A witness to the accident, Albert Osorio told AL.com "The whole thing flipped down on those kids. It took all of us here to stand it back up. Everybody started screaming."

Luke Bresette's Uncle, Alex Bresette told the AL.com "He was a beautiful boy. He was great in school he was bright and inquisitive...You know how some kids get too old to hug you anymore? Not Luke, he always hugged."

The Mayor of Birmingham released a statement after the incident saying, "I have offered our full support to the Airport Authority as they investigate what has occurred this afternoon. I have asked our public safety staff to assist this family in their time of need in any way possible as they grapple with what has happened."

Luke Bresette was the third of 5 children. He was in the fifth grade at Saint Thomas More School in Kansas City.
