Divorce $11.2 Billion: Impending Divorce Threatens Harold Hamm’s Oil Fortune, Biggest Divorce Settlement Ever?

A divorce of $11.2 billion is putting the Continental Resources chief executive Harold Hamm, one of the richest men in America's fortune on the line.

Sue Ann Hamm, Harold Hamm's second wife and former executive at Continental, filed for divorce about a year ago on May 19, 2012, Oklahoma court records show.

Although the documents in the case are sealed, based on the filings obtained by Reuters on March 7, Sue Ann alleges her husband "was having an affair" which led her to later file for divorce.

The Hamms married in April 1988 and have two adult children. He acknowledged that the couple separated back in 2005, and the two have lived separate lives ever since.

Sue Ann, 56, held key positions at Continental, she led oil-industry trade groups in Oklahoma, testified to Congress on behalf of the company, and created Continental's oil and gas marketing units.

This can allow Sue Ann to walk away with about $5.6 billion, making it the most expensive divorce settlement. Even if her allegations are not true, she has a good chance of getting a nice pay.

"Whether the Hamms signed a prenuptial agreement is unclear. Legal analysts who reviewed court filings said that without one, the case could lead to a record-breaking financial settlement," reports the New York Post.

"I don't know of anything that's ever been this big," Barbara Atwood, professor emeritus of family law at the University of Arizona told NY Post. "There's just so much money involved."

If the divorce ends with the pair splitting their fortune in half, then their divorce settlement will be more expensive than the top 6 expensive divorces combined.

Below is a list of some of the most expensive divorces in America.

  • Mel Gibson and Robyn Gibson - $425 million
  • Craig and Wendy McCaw - $460 million
  • Stephen and Elaine Wynn - $740 million
  • Adnan and Soraya Khashoggi - $874 million
  • Bernie and Slavica Eccelstone - $1 billion
  • Rupert and Anna Murdoch - $1.7 billion
